You might ask what is a "mezzo-contralto"? Not a common term these days, but in days gone by used to refer to voices such as those of Maria Malibran, voices that possessed the heft and darkness of the contralto timbre combined with the agility and range of the more typical mezzo-soprano voice. The great mezzo-contralti of history sang everything equally, Rossini to Verdi to Wagner, without the specialization of today.
